Sheffield Wednesday utility man Callum Paterson would be open to signing a new contract if the opportunity arises, according to The Star.
Sheffield Wednesday have had Scottish ace Callum Paterson on the books since 2020. He joined from Cardiff City that summer and has remained a SWFC mainstay since.
Despite spells in and out of the starting XI, Paterson has always cut a valuable figure at Hillsborough thanks to his remarkable versatility.
The popular 30-year-old has only recently come back into Danny Rohl’s Owls starting XI though. His six Championship starts have all come in the last two months, and a return of four goals in his last seven outings has made for a fine run of form.
After it may have previously been thought Paterson would be destined to leave Sheffield Wednesday at the end of his deal this summer, his recent form has sparked questions over what could lay ahead.
Now, The Star has said that Paterson would be ‘very open’ to staying in the Steel City if offered a new deal. He’s settled in Sheffield and has proven to be a valuable asset over the years.
His contract at SWFC was last extended by a single year in May 2024.
A player worth keeping
Sheffield Wednesday have multiple contract decisions to make going into this summer. They rarely act during the campaign, so it is likely that those out of contract will have to wait until the season’s end to know their fate.
Change feels likely this summer and letting some of those out of contract go would be a way to free up space for new signings. However, there are some valuable players with deals expiring, Paterson included.
Paterson has earned a new deal with his return of seven goals in 22 games and his versatility means he can always be depended on. While mainly playing in attack this season, the Scot has spent much of his career in defence as a right-back too.
A big summer ahead?
Sheffield Wednesday are expected to stay in the Championship this season despite the chances of them making the play-offs. It would be a remarkable surge to break into the top six, albeit a feasible one.
Regardless of how the campaign ends, change is afoot come the end of this season. The playing squad could go through some big changes while question marks remain over the future of manager Rohl.
Until then though, SWFC will be out to end this season as strongly as possible. They’ll be out to make it three straight wins against Steel City rivals Sheffield United this Sunday.
