30-Year-Old Gives Assessment Of Sheffield Wednesday Squad

Sheffield Wednesday striker Jamal Lowe believes his side has the potential to turn their season around and prove their critics wrong.

Despite a shaky start, the Jamaican forward is confident in the depth and quality within the squad as they aim for improvement in the Championship. The Owls narrowly avoided relegation last season and have struggled to find their rhythm this year.

However, Lowe, who joined the Owls on a free transfer from Bournemouth, is optimistic about the future. He is convinced the team has the necessary talent to rise up the league table.

“The quality of the squad is scary,” Lowe remarked after scoring twice in his early appearances for the team. Speaking to SportsBoom.com, he highlighted the competition for places as a key factor for future success: “The strength in depth is really good, the players off the bench are unbelievable. There are players who aren’t even making the squad, and we have got a few injured boys as well.”

Lowe, who has played for clubs like Swansea City, QPR, Wigan, and Portsmouth, knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He praised the professionalism and quality within the team, emphasizing how the competitive atmosphere will push everyone to perform. “Competition for places is tough, and that’s only going to help people perform at their peak because they know if they don’t, there is somebody else ready to take their place,” he added.

He also noted that the club’s squad depth offers something many teams lack: “It’s not like at some clubs where the person replacing you is 18 and might have never played a game. We have got certified quality waiting to be on the pitch and that’s good for the squad. It’s a long season and we are going to need everyone.”

Reflecting on the Owls’ difficult return to the Championship, Lowe remains optimistic. Sheffield Wednesday finished a concerning 20th last season after earning promotion the year before, but Lowe has his sights set higher this time. He’s determined to help the team push towards a play-off spot. “I think the play-offs are possible,” Lowe said confidently. “We have got to take it one game at a time, but I think that has to be the aim. Why not?”

Lowe’s personal goals are just as ambitious. After scoring nine goals last season, he’s hoping to surpass that tally this year. “I want to score as many as possible and stay fit,” he said. “If everyone does their job and stays fit, it is going to be good come the end of the season.”

Lowe also expressed strong support for Ike Ugbo, Sheffield Wednesday’s record signing. The former England Under-21 international joined the Owls permanently this summer after an impressive loan spell. Lowe is confident Ugbo will make a significant impact this season, saying, “He’s a top-quality player. If I’m not scoring, I’m sure he will be ready to score.”

Our View

Jamal Lowe’s optimism is infectious, and it’s exactly what Sheffield Wednesday need after a tough start. His faith in the squad’s depth, coupled with the desire to compete at the highest level, is a promising sign. With players like Lowe and Ugbo leading the line, there’s no reason why the Owls can’t make a push up the table as the season progresses.

However, ambition alone won’t be enough. The Championship is notoriously difficult, and while the talent in the squad is undeniable, consistency and fitness will be crucial if Wednesday are to challenge for a play-off spot. Still, with Lowe’s confidence and the strength of the squad, there’s plenty for fans to feel hopeful about.
