25-Year-old Opens Up On His Future With Portsmouth

Portsmouth midfielder Andre Dozzell has said his uncertain contract situation doesn’t ‘concern’ him.

Portsmouth swooped to sign him last summer on a free transfer. He was handed a one-year deal with Pompey running until June 2025.

Dozzell, 25, has since made 29 appearances in all competitions so far this season, 27 of which have come in the Championship. He has chipped in with one goal.

In this latest update regarding his long-term future at Fratton Park, he has said, as per a report by The News: “My contract situation doesn’t really concern me, I’m just trying to do the best I can for the club. The aim is to stay up, I just leave it to my agent and focus on the football, doing my best each week. Then maybe we’ll see.

“Before I came here I had discussions with the Sheffield United manager, but chose to join Pompey and hopefully we can stay up. You are always fighting for your career, no matter how many years you’ve got. You’re fighting to stay at a club, to get a new contract or to get a move, but I am just focused on Pompey staying up.”

Portsmouth’s Andre Dozzell on future

Portsmouth’s chances of keeping Dozzell are likely to depend on what league they are in.

They signed him last summer following their promotion from League One.

He has added more competition and depth to their ranks and has made a positive impression.

Dozzell rose up through the academy ranks at Ipswich Town and was a regular for the Tractor Boys at various different youth levels.

He went on to play 93 matches for the Suffolk club and scored three goals.

QPR came calling in 2021 and he spent three years on the books of the Hoops, playing 98 matches altogether.

The ex-England youth international spent the second-half of the last campaign on loan at Birmingham City but couldn’t prevent the Blues from relegation to the third tier.

What now?

Portsmouth have a big decision to make about whether to retain his services for longer.

As things stand, he will become a free agent again in late June and they risk losing him for nothing.

John Mousinho’s men won 2-0 away at Oxford United over the weekend to boost their survival hopes.

They are back in action on Saturday with a home clash against Dozzell’s previous team QPR as they look to keep their momentum going.
