At just 18 years old, Wests Tigers rookie Heamasi Makasini has already achieved what many young players only dream of an NRL debut, while still completing his HSC at Newington College.

On the MayDay Podcast, Makasini revealed his journey to first grade and what he aspires to achieve in his career.

Raised in Orange, NSW, he was playing rugby union before the idea of switching codes crossed his mind.

His first taste of league came when a friend suggested he have a crack at the game, and with the approval from his parents, it would become a decision that would ultimately change his life.

By year 11, his potential was obvious so much so that the Wests Tigers locked him into a three-year deal, securing one of the competition’s brightest prospects.

Within a year’s span, he would make his first grade debut after a full pre-season under his belt and rising up the ranks from playing in Harold Matt’s to Jersey Flegg to NSW Cup.

Makasini crossed for a try against the Titans, announcing himself to fans and adding another spark to the Tigers’ rebuild.

The weekend’s high was followed by an abrupt return to reality back to school on Monday morning, preparing for exams while classmates celebrated his heroics.

“It’s a whole different change,” Makasini revealed.

Off the field, Makasini’s priorities remain firmly grounded.

He spoke about his determination to buy his family a house, a goal that reflects the sacrifices they made to support his sporting dreams.

“The best thing I could do is to repay them back for everything they’ve done,” the young outside back declared.

Makasini also draws inspiration from one of the NRL’s elite, Stephen Crichton, who appears on his phone’s lock screen, a daily reminder of the standard he wants to reach.

“He’s my favourite player. The things he’s done for the game and I try to base my game off his,” Makasini said.

The 18-year-old also confirmed that he wants to also play State of Origin and play for Tonga while playing rugby league and hopes to eventually play for the Wallabies in Rugby Union, similar to what Joseph Sua’ali’i has done.
